More about this watch
Launched in 1997, the Langematik is exemplary of the almost forgotten "to be more than to appear" in our society. The watch, which appears so restrained and unobtrusive on the outside, proves to be a treasure trove of traditional watchmaking and technical innovation. The classic design of the Langematik gives no hint of the ingenious technology concealed within the case. A. Lange & Söhne took around seven years to introduce a perpetual calendar, but in 2001 the Langematik Perpetual was unveiled to the world. However, the company was not breaking new ground with the Langematik Perpetual, as pocket watches with perpetual calendars had already been produced between 1887 and 1931 under the management of Ferdinand Adolph Lange's sons and grandsons. The combination of the Lange outsize date with the complicated mechanics of a calendar circuit, which in addition to the date also displays the month, the day of the week, the position of the moon and the four-year cycle from one leap year to the next, is new and thus different from all previously built watches with a perpetual calendar.
Due to the large amount of information that a watch with a perpetual calendar has to provide, it seems difficult to place the various displays on a dial and still make it clear and easy to read. However, A. Lange & Söhne also solved this task satisfactorily, whereby the Saxons obviously benefited from the large date window and the clear small seconds display, two characteristics of their watches that have a dominant position on the dial in accordance with their importance. The fact that the seconds display has hardly lost any of its usual clarity, despite the moon phase display integrated into its sub-dial, is particularly noteworthy. The large date and seconds display, together with the bold gold hands, the appropriately sized printed minute scale and the applied gold numerals, allow the "basic information" to be obtained quickly at a glance.
