We are proud to present this rare and exceptional timepiece: An extremely rare Patek Philippe perpetual calendar with the reference 3940 in 18k yellow gold. This watch features the rare dial from the early second series (without a crosshair in the sub-dial at 3 o’clock), of which only approximately 700 examples were produced (between 1987 and 1989).
However, what makes this watch an absolute grail is its movement number, which is 7706xx. Movement numbers in this range mark the transition from the first series to the early second series of the 3940, as well as movement numbers for references 3941 and 3945. We are therefore talking about a very rare ‘transitional model’, there is a high probability that this watch is one of the very first from the early second series! For any watch lover and enthusiast, a 3940 is a highlight in its own right and amongst collectors it is one of the most sought-after perpetual calendars in the long history of the Patek Philippe brand. The watch offered here is the very pinnacle of this reference and nothing less than a so-called ‘Holy Grail’.
As if that were not enough, the watch is still fitted with the original Patek leather bracelet from 1987, with the original PP pin buckle in yellow gold, the watch has been worn only rarely, as evidenced by the gold hallmarks on the side of the case at 9 o’clock. Beneath the solid case back, the automatic Calibre 240Q with micro-rotor operates, it has been awarded the Geneva Seal - for a perpetual calendar, the calibre has a very slim height of just 3.75 mm particularly in the 1980s, this was a masterpiece of fine watchmaking. The watch is currently sealed following a service at Patek Philippe in 2026 (sent in via WEMPE, invoice enclosed). The watch is supplied in a complete German full set comprising: original PP box and outer carton – warranty certificate (sold in September 1987 by Kutter, Stuttgart / Germany – manufactured in August 1987) – 3940 booklets – original purchase invoices from Kutter – additional booklets – sales catalogues – Patek correction pen – PP service leather case.
As the successor to Patek Philippe’s legendary perpetual calendar references 3448 and 3450, the 3940 represents a highlight in Patek’s history. Whilst the two references mentioned are currently trading at prices ranging from 250.000 € to seven-figure sums, depending on their condition and content of delivery, the 3940 is still priced lower, however the direction the market is taking has been clear for many months and is likely to continue. This particular reference 3940 is a ‘blue chip’ for any Patek Philippe connoisseur and a one-of-a-kind piece on the current market, to the best of our knowledge, no models from the early second series with an original certificate are currently on offer anywhere in the world. This 3940 is in fact, incomparable to any other watch on the market, after extensive research we have not found any other watch that falls within this category. If you’re looking for a truly special Patek Philippe, this watch is the perfect choice. The only thing left now is for this rarity to find its way into the hands of someone who will appreciate its rarity and uniqueness.
