Extremely rare and exceptional vintage Piaget Jumbo Polo with the reference 7661 C 701 in 18k white gold. The original Piaget Polo of the first version was released in the 70s and 80s in two different versions, once with a round case and also with a square, so-called rectangular case. There were two sizes of the square version and three sizes of the round version, with reference 7661 representing the largest round Polo with a diameter of 34 mm, hence the name Jumbo. The men's watches also feature the 7P calibre, which was the thinnest quartz calibre in the world at the time and is still impressive today.
In total, only around 4,000 to 6,000 of the square and round Polo of all sizes were produced. Unfortunately, many watches were probably melted down due to the massive workmanship and heavy weight, which also reduces the number of watches still in existence today and makes them all the rarer. This does not make it easy to find a large round Polo with the reference 7661 in yellow gold, as around 70% of all variants were produced in yellow gold and only around 20% in bicolour (yellow and white gold), making this variant significantly rarer. By far the rarest and most sought-after version, however, is the 34 mm white gold Jumbo Polo, of which only 10% left the Piaget manufactory. Only a few examples are known from auctions and private collections; only the Polo shown here is currently on the market!
The present exhibit has an impressive weight of 149.6 grams and a total length (bracelet with watch) of approx. 20.5 cm. Furthermore, the watch is in its original unpolished condition and was overhauled by Piaget in Geneva in September 2024 (without refurbishment and polishing, the invoice is enclosed). This rare Polo comes with the original Piaget box with outer box - Piaget Certificate for Insurance Purposes - service invoice and delivery note - service case. As previously described, the condition is not refurbished, there are traces of wear and scratches on the case and bracelet (as can be clearly seen in the HR photos), as well as two small compressions on the edge of the case (if desired, the new and happy owner can have them laser-cut by a professional goldsmith). We look forward to receiving your price offer for the POLO described.
The Piaget case by Pinel & Pinel shown here was specially made for Piaget itself. The original price for a presentation case like the one shown is between €10,500 and €12,500 excluding tax. The dimensions are: height 26 cm x width 23.5 cm, with a total weight of over 4 kg. Two drawers for jewellery (rings, necklaces, bracelets etc.) can be opened to the right and left of the case. The case is made of high-quality leather, elaborately finished and perfectly matches the exclusivity and uniqueness of the Piaget Polo! The Pinel & Pinel Piaget case shown is not included in the price of the watch and can be purchased on request.
In general, the Polo has a legendary history, as it was the first Piaget brand watch with its own model name, although Piaget was strictly against it at the time. However, the Polo's elegant yet sporty design made it an extremely popular model, so it needed an appropriate name. At the time, Piaget was sponsoring the Polo World Cup in Palm Beach, so the name was both obvious and ingenious. In 1979, the Piaget Polo was born. It was produced until the early 1990s and worn by actors and sports stars, such as Robert De Niro in Casino, reflecting the image of the watch mercilessly! This was followed by other well-known model series such as the Protocole, Tanagra, Gouverneur, Emperador and the Altiplano. Piaget is also known for its fascinating and spectacular dials, which can often be seen in Polo's, such as lapis lazuli, onyx, malachite or tiger's eye dials. The Piaget brand itself was also involved in the development of the Beta 21 calibre in the late 1960s. This quartz calibre was designed and developed jointly by a total of 21 watch manufacturers (including Rolex, Patek Philippe, IWC etc.); it is one of the most famous and legendary quartz calibres of all time and was presented in April 1970. On closer inspection, the design of the Polo is often reminiscent of the Big Four icons designed by Gerald Genta and Jörg Hysek (Patek Philippe Nautilus 3700, Audemars Piguet Royal Oak 5402, IWC Ingenieur 1832 and the Vacheron Constantin 222). In recent years, the Polo has been gaining in importance again, among other things with the release of the Polo 79, a renaissance of the classic Polo and a perfect gift to Piaget for its 150th birthday.
